AMA, a woman diver, dives into the ocean and takes shellfish without equipment like Aqua Lung. For 3000 years, women in Mie prefecture in Japan have inherited their way of life from generation to generation. They are a symbol of the emancipated Japanese woman. However, this culture is now threatened by climate change, oceanic pollution, and depopulation.
"AMA-Perlentaucherin" focuses on the present and history of AMA culture. This piece takes the audience into a world of life with tradition, religion, and respectful treatment of the environment. On the stage, the dancers' movements flow to the music of Thorsten Quaeschning (Tangerine Dream). Finely tuned video installation enlarges the space.
Although this production had been planned as a stage piece in 2020, Yoriko Maeno developed a digital version for an online audience. This 360° dance film was shown online at various performance festivals in Edinburgh, Yokohama, and Sydney. In the current stage version, more scenes are added to the context of our contemporary time.
